Although “gingival hyperpigmentation” sounds complicated, it is actually a very simple concept that is used to describe the “darkening of the gums”. We are now able to treat this condition with lasers right here in our office.
Gingival and lip hyperpigmentation is not uncommon and can be caused by high levels of melanin in the skin. Development of these dark spots can often be related to smoking, medication, and genetics. In most cases, the concerns are esthetic and not health-related, although melanoma, which is a malignant form of skin cancer, can appear as hyperpigmentation of the skin inside the mouth as well.
Laser depigmentation is a procedure that erases the pigment from the surface of your gums and lips to lighten them and give you a clear glowing smile. The procedure is quick, painless, and most patients return to work the same day.
If dark spots on your gums or lips are a concern, you may be a good candidate for laser depigmentation. The procedure is often referred to as “gum bleaching”. Contrary to popular belief, this procedure doesn’t actually involve bleach, but rather precision laser energy to quickly and painlessly correct darkening of the gums and lips. The procedure can be done in one visit and generally takes less than an hour.
Any minor discomfort that is experienced after the procedure can usually be eliminated with over-the-counter pain medication. You will be able to eat, talk and return to work as needed right after the treatment. We recommend that you not smoke for 7 days following your procedure, or quit completely as smoking can influence recurrence of the dark spots in the future.
If you have a general darkening of, or actual spots on your gums or lips, give us a call to set up a consultation. First we will examine your gums to ensure that they are in good health, and then work with you to develop a customized treatment plan.
